What are Divisional Charts?
Suppose you have one large picture of the night sky with stars, planets, and other heavenly bodies. This large picture is like a map of the universe. Now suppose you divide this picture into smaller parts in order to look more closely at different sections. These smaller pieces are known as divisional charts. Each piece helps us understand particular aspects of a person’s life such as their personality, career, relationships among others.
In Vedic Astrology divisional charts are known as vargas and they enable astrologers to make much detailed and accurate predictions.
Purpose of Divisional Charts
Why did ancient sages develop divisional charts in the first place? Because they knew that the soul (Atman) incarnates with a multi-layered karma, and life is not monolithic. A person may enjoy great wealth but struggle in marriage, or have deep spiritual tendencies but face difficulties in career. The D1 chart gives the foundation, but the divisional charts provide the microscope through which a planet’s real ability to give results in a particular domain is tested.
Parashara Rishi, the father of predictive astrology, said:
“The Vargas are the limbs of the horoscope. Just as the body cannot function fully without its limbs, a horoscope cannot be interpreted properly without analyzing the vargas.”
